A New Spin on Preventing Sexual AssaultThere is a new way to talk about sexual violence in Maine.
Every April, Downeast Sexual Assault Services recognizes Sexual Assault Awareness Month. However, this year the statewide focus has shifted toward talking about healthy relationships and healthy sexuality. Prevention of sexual violence – and in fact, all violent crimes – boils down to basic respect for others and for those with whom we have relationships throughout life. From asking your boss for permission to take the day off to asking to pat someone’s dog to holding hands to having sex – it’s all is about respect and consent. To celebrate Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Downeast Sexual Assault Services is planning the following events: “Sex Positive” dinner party on April 12th at the Barncastle Restaurant in Blue Hill. This evening is for adults over 18, and will feature dinner, frank conversations about healthy sexuality and door prizes. For more information or to purchase tickets, please contact Nina at 667-5304 ext 278. Take Back the Night Speak Out on April 18th, awareness walk and bystander intervention training from 6-9pm at College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor. All are welcome. Call Jodi 667-5304 ext. 227 for more information. Denim Day on April 25th. Show your support for sexual assault survivors by wearing jeans. WHY DENIM? Denim Day began after a girl was raped by her driving instructor in Italy. The victim reported the crime and her rapist was found guilty. The Italian Supreme Court overturned the conviction citing that the victim was wearing jeans at the time of the attack. The judge stated that she would have had to help her attacker remove her jeans, making the sex consensual. The judgment sparked a worldwide outcry.Denim Day is an outward example of how a community can help change perceptions about violence against women, men & children. Share your photos with us on our Facebook page on the 25th.If you or someone you know has experienced sexual violence, and live in Hancock or Washington Counties please call Downeast Sexual Assault Services’ toll-free, confidential crisis and support line at 1.800.228.2470 or the state wide confidential crisis and support line at 1-800-871-7741 or 1-888-458-559 to be connected to the sexual assault center nearest you.
