Downeast Health was recently awarded $2,696 through the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) project funded by Macy’s.With this funding, each child enrolled in the WIC (Women, Infants & Children) nutrition program will receive two free books year. The RIF literacy project works to motivate young children to read by working with children, their parents, and community members to make reading a fun and beneficial part of everyday life. Since 2004 Macy’s, through customer-supported fundraising campaigns, in store events and volunteer activities, has provided $16 million dollars in the RIF project.

Local Home Visiting Program Broadens Scope |

Maine Families, a statewide home visiting program for pregnant women and families with new babies funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, has announced changes in its program that broaden the scope of service and can serve many more families in Hancock County. The program, which is administered in Hancock County by Downeast Health Services of Ellsworth, is free for all pregnant women and families with new babies. There are no income guidelines or other requirements as long as the baby is under 3-months old. In the past the program was limited to first-time parents.

Downeast Health Services has welcomed Cheryle Monson as the Client Coordinator for Maine Coast Community Dental Clinic in Ellsworth. Cheryle has been engaged in patient centered medical care for the last 14 years. In her new role, Cheryle will work to accommodate individual patient needs by helping to coordinate transportation, organize childcare and other financial considerations enabling patients to take full advantage of their dental appointments. A New Spin on Preventing Sexual Assault |
There is a new way to talk about sexual violence in Maine.

Every April, Downeast Sexual Assault Services recognizes Sexual Assault Awareness Month. However, this year the statewide focus has shifted toward talking about healthy relationships and healthy sexuality.
Prevention of sexual violence – and in fact, all violent crimes – boils down to basic respect for others and for those with whom we have relationships throughout life. From asking your boss for permission to take the day off to asking to pat someone’s dog to holding hands to having sex – it’s all is about respect and consent.
